Toronto-based indie rock duo Soft Set is back with a new video for their new true crime-inspired track “Diamond”. Watch it exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

“Diamond” is the 2nd single from Soft Set’s new album Still Life, which is set for release later this summer. Mastered by Simon Scott (Slowdive) at SPS Mastering studio in the UK, the fast-paced, dark and brooding track was inspired by a true crime podcast.

“We heard of this story of a boy who killed his mother and then himself in Jefferson Township, NJ, in the late 80s and the whole story was just so bizarre,” says Soft Set’s James Gray. “He seemed to be a good kid and all of that changed within a matter of months leading up to the tragic night when everything changed. It’s a fascinating story and there’s a great podcast called ‘The Devil Within’ that explores what happened and what possibly drove this boy to do what he did. Check it out!”’Diamond’ will be available on June 24th on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide.

It all started when James Gray and Nathan Athay met for the first time in high school in Barrie, Ontario. It didn’t take long in their friendship for them to realize that they had a lot in common, especially when it came to their taste in music.

Nathan started playing drums in a local shoegaze, space rock band and James wasn’t far behind, learning guitar and writing songs of his own. Soon after, James became the band’s backup guitar player, filling in whenever the main guitar player couldn’t make a show. That band lasted only a few years, but James and Nathan continued to work separately on other projects, as well as working together whenever they could. Things really amped up in 2006 when James and Nathan were living in Toronto and part of an indie rock band recording their debut album at e5 studios downtown. During that time, James and Nathan learned a lot about the recording/production process, which inspired them to continue to push themselves musically, and eventually create what has now become Soft Set. Drawing on influences from iconic artists that have inspired them on their musical path—The Stone Roses, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, RIDE, Slowdive, Happy Mondays, The Boo Radleys, Mercury Rev—Soft Set’s upcoming LP is sure to appeal to a broad audience. There’s definitely something for everyone on this upcoming release.Fun fact! Simon Scott (Slowdive percussionist) mastered their latest single “Diamond” along with the rest of the tracks on the upcoming album (Still Life) set for release later this summer.
